BJP appoints Tarun Chugh to oversee Manipur legislature party leader election

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken the first steps towards forming a government in Manipur, appointing national general secretary Tarun Chugh as the central observer for the election of the state’s legislative party leader. The announcement signals the party’s intent to select a new Chief Minister ahead of the expiry of the current spell of President’s rule.

All BJP MLAs from Manipur were called to Delhi on Monday for a meeting with the party’s top leadership. Among those present were former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Assembly Speaker Satyabrata Singh, former minister Y Khemchand Singh and state party president A Sharda Devi. The meeting is expected to lay the groundwork for electing a leader who could head the government once President’s rule ends.

“BJP Parliamentary Board has appointed Shri Tarun Chugh, National General Secretary, as Central Observer for the election of the Legislative Party Leader in Manipur,” read a letter issued by Arun Kumar, BJP National General Secretary and headquarters in-charge.
