In IPL 2025, an exciting match was played between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals on 16 April, in which a tremendous drama was seen. The match went to the super over, in which the Delhi team won. However, controversy has arisen over a no ball. In fact, this season Mitchell Starc, who is playing for Delhi this season, bowled in the super over, and his fourth ball was called a no ball by the umpire, on which the debate has been sparked. Fans believe that there has been injustice to the team of Stark and Delhi.
Why did the umpire give no ball?
In the super over, Delhi Capitals bowled first, and Mitchell Starc scored just 5 runs against right -handed batsman Shimron Hetmyer off the first three balls. On the fourth ball, the right -handed batsman Ryan Parag came on a strike, so Stark went to the round the wicket, which hit a four. But the third umpire gave the signal of no ball. However, Stark’s front leg was not crossing the crease line, yet no ball was given, which caused a dispute.
Actually, the third umpire gave a no ball based on Stark’s backfoot (previous leg). Stark’s rear leg was touching the return crease line, which is considered a no ball according to the rules. The decision was also discussed in the commentary box, and some experts initially criticized, but later believed that the umpire’s decision was correct.
What does the rule say?
According to MCC (Marylibon Cricket Club) Canium 21.5.1:
“If the bowler’s rear leg returns touches or crosses the crease, he will be considered a no ball. The bowler’s foot should be inside the line and should not touch it.” It is clear that the umpire’s decision was according to the rules, and there was no injustice to Delhi Capitals.
Rajasthan Royals could not take advantage
Despite the no ball, Rajasthan Royals could not take advantage of it. Ryan Parag was run out on free hit, and Yashasvi Jaiswal was also run out on the next ball. In this way, Rajasthan scored just 11 runs in 5 balls of the super over. Delhi Capitals achieved the target in just 4 balls with the batting of KL Rahul and Triston Stabs.
