What will happen to Vinesh Phogat? (PC-PTI)
Female wrestler Vinesh Phogat was allowed by the Delhi High Court to participate in the selection trials of the Asian Games, but now the Wrestling Federation of India i.e. WFI has moved the Supreme Court against this decision. The hearing of this case will be on 29th May. Let us tell you that on May 22, Delhi High Court had raised questions on the selection policy of WFI and called it discriminatory. The High Court had said that the selection policy of WFI was discriminatory because it did not even consider the name of a veteran player like Vinesh Phogat. The High Court had said that Vinesh Phogat should be allowed to participate in the trials for the Asian Games to be held on 30th and 3rd May.
High Court has ordered video recording of the trial
While giving the verdict in favor of Vinesh, Delhi High Court had also said that video recording of the trials to be held on 30th and 31st May should be done. The High Court had ordered that the Sports Authority of India and an independent observer would also be present during the trial. The court had said that the standards set for the selection trials are quite different from the practice till now. The court also said that WFI should ensure that Vinesh Phogat Maternity leave should not be the basis for excluding female athletes.
Vinesh vs WFI
There is a dispute going on between Vinesh and WFI since the beginning of May. WFI had banned Vinesh from participating in any domestic tournament till June 26. WFI had disqualified Vinesh saying that she had not completed the six-month notice for withdrawal from retirement under anti-doping rules. Vinesh had come to participate in the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Vinesh had taken part in the dharna of women wrestlers in 2023 over the allegations of alleged sexual harassment against former WFI President and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified in the Paris Olympics due to being 100 grams overweight, after which she retired.
