The ongoing tension between the world’s two biggest tech companies, Apple and ChatGPT maker OpenAI, has now come to the fore. Apple has filed a case against OpenAI and two of its former employees in an American court. Apple alleges that OpenAI tried to further its hardware business by obtaining information related to its confidential and trade secrets.
Apple says that OpenAI accessed the company’s sensitive information through former employees, recruitment process and supplier network. The company claims that this information can be used to make future AI based devices. On the other hand, OpenAI has rejected these allegations and said that it has no interest in the trade secrets of any other company. OpenAI says that its focus is only on developing new technology that will benefit people around the world.
The future of iPhone may also be affected
Experts believe that this case is not limited to confidential information only. In fact, this is also a fight for control over the future AI device market. According to reports, OpenAI can work on devices that are different from traditional smartphones, apps and operating systems. If such products are successful then people’s dependence on iPhone may reduce. This is the reason why Apple is looking at this matter very seriously.
Which employees were accused?
Apple has also included the names of two of its former employees in the case. The company alleges that an employee did not return his office laptop after leaving the company and later accessed the company’s network and downloaded several confidential hardware files. Another employee is accused of emailing himself information related to Apple’s suppliers and internal industry reports before leaving the job. Apple claims that these employees have played an important role in the development of the iPhone for years.
More than 400 former Apple employees are working in OpenAI
Apple said in the court that more than 400 former Apple employees are currently working in OpenAI. The company says that it is not wrong for an employee to have previously worked at Apple, but using Apple’s confidential information may be a violation of the law. Legal experts believe that if Apple proves that confidential documents reached OpenAI and were used, then this matter can become a big problem for OpenAI.
Both companies were once partners
Interestingly, Apple and OpenAI have been partner companies for many years. In 2024, Apple added ChatGPT to Siri with its Apple Intelligence feature. Through this, iPhone users can take help of ChatGPT from Siri. However, as the AI race intensified, the competition between the two companies increased. Last year, OpenAI bought io Products, a hardware startup created by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for about $6.5 billion. It is believed that through this, OpenAI wants to move beyond software and enter the hardware market.
