Budget 2026: China’s dominance will end, Rs 40,000 crore announced for semiconductors

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Budget 2026: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made a big announcement regarding semiconductors in Budget 2026. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the launch of India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 under the Union Budget 2026-27. Under this, the focus will be on industry-led research and training centers for semiconductors.

To advance the semiconductor mission, the budget was increased to Rs 40,000 crore. Mineral-rich states like Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will be supported. A scheme will be launched to help states set up three special chemical parks, which will boost domestic manufacturing in the country.

Why is semiconductor necessary?

Semiconductors are very important for India because almost every modern technology today runs on them. Semiconductor chips are used in mobile, laptop, TV, car, washing machine, AC, internet devices etc. Currently, India imports most of its chips from abroad. If the chip is made in the country itself, the cost will be less and there will be no risk of supply stoppage. India is most dependent on China for semiconductors.

Strength to Make in India

With the formation of semiconductor in the country, electronics, mobile, auto and defense manufacturing will accelerate. Lakhs of direct and indirect jobs will be created in semiconductor factories, research and design. If the chips used in defence, space, missile and cyber security are made in the country, then security will be strengthened. Semiconductors are essential for AI, 5G/6G, electric vehicles, data centers and smart cities.
