In today’s fast-paced life, anxiety, restlessness and overthinking have become the problem of almost every person. Work pressure, social media noise and constant worries in the mind further increase mental fatigue.
In such situations, people often look for complex therapy or lengthy meditation techniques, whereas a very simple way to find peace is hidden in our everyday lives. According to a mindful practice from Japan, whenever you feel anxious or restless, start cleaning. This habit teaches the mind to focus on action by removing it from negative thinking.
Nutritionist Shweta Shah says that this method shifts the focus of the mind from worries to the present moment. According to him, not only has he tried this habit himself, but many of his clients have also felt instant mental peace from it.
What to do when you have anxiety?
- Start washing the dishes. The movement of the hands and the sound of the water calm the mind, bringing attention to the present moment.
- Clean one drawer, not the entire house, just a small area. Doing this gives a feeling of control and satisfaction.
- Declutter a corner: Removing unnecessary items makes the mind feel lighter and as the clutter reduces, anxiety also reduces.
Why does this method work?
- The brain’s focus shifts immediately: When anxiety increases, the mind repeatedly gets trapped in negative thoughts. Cleaning shifts the focus from thinking to action and the movement of the hands brings the mind into the ‘here and now’.
- Small tasks provide a sense of control: In anxiety, things often seem out of control. In such a situation, it is beneficial to clean a drawer, shelf or table. Accomplishing small goals gives relief to the mind and increases the confidence that ‘I am able to do something’.
- Repetitive movements calm the nervous system: Washing utensils, keeping clothes neatly or sweeping – all these are repetitive movements. The nervous system receives a signal that there is no danger and the heart rate and restlessness gradually reduce.
- As the clutter reduces, the mental burden also reduces: The scattered environment makes the mind more tired. Decluttering reduces visual noise and a clean space gives the mind a chance to relax. Mood and focus both improve
- Mindfulness automatically activates: There is no need for separate meditation in this habit. You start paying attention to the sound of water, the texture of things, and your mind comes out of the past and future into the present.
