The Supreme Court has put a stay on the new rules of UGC till the next hearing. The court said that some provisions of the rules are vague and the possibility of their misuse cannot be ruled out. Political reactions have also come to light after this decision of the Supreme Court. Opposition parties expressed their views on this issue and demanded the government and UGC to reconsider the rules. The court has directed the central government and UGC to prepare a new draft and conduct extensive consultation on it. The next hearing of the case will be on March 19. At present the UGC rules of 2012 will remain in force.
