According to the popular story, ‘Once Devraj Indra was roaming in the Nandan forest. At that time Gandharvas were singing and girls were dancing. There was also a Gandharva girl named Pushpavati who fell in love with a Gandharva named Malyavan after seeing him. Due to which there was lack of rhythm in his dance. Seeing this, Devraj Indra cursed Pushpavati and Malyavan to go to earth.

Due to the curse, both of them started living in the form of vampires in the Himalayas. That place was very inaccessible, due to which it was not easy to live there.
