Bomb Threat at University of Utah: Police Increase Patrols as Officials Say ‘Hallmarks of a Hoax’ Are Present

The University of Utah issued a campus alert Wednesday afternoon after a bomb threat was reported to Salt Lake City 911, warning students, faculty, and staff to remain alert as police increased their presence on campus.

According to the alert, the call was received just after 4 PM, with a caller claiming that bombs had been placed on campus. University officials said the caller provided only vague descriptions and locations, raising concerns but offering no specific, actionable details.

In the campus alert sent at 4:53 PM, officials noted that similar threats were reported in several other states on the same day. Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the call showed “hallmarks of a hoax,” but emphasized that the situation was still being taken seriously.

“Out of an abundance of caution,” the alert stated, additional police officers were deployed across campus, and community members were advised to expect a larger law enforcement presence while patrols continued.

“Today just after 4:00 pm, a call came into Salt Lake City 911 from a caller stating there were bombs placed on campus. Only vague descriptions and locations were given. There were several threats in other states today that were very similar. The hallmarks of a hoax are present with this threat, however, out of an abundance of caution there are additional police on campus patrolling and you may see a larger police presence. If you see anything suspicious or out of place please call UUUPD at 801-585-2677,” the campus alert message read.
