The attack on doctors in Thane, Maharashtra has now become not only an issue of law and order but also an issue of safety and mental health of health workers. After the alleged attack on two doctors by a Shiv Sena corporator at KDMC’s Shastri Nagar Hospital, the family of the victim doctors has for the first time spoken openly about their mental condition. He says that both the doctors are in deep shock after the incident and are still living in an atmosphere of fear.
‘Wake up from sleep and ask, is someone attacking?’
Dr. Srishti Baviskar’s father Mahendra Baviskar said that his daughter and her colleague Dr. Vaibhav Salunkhe have still not recovered from the shock of the incident. According to him, both of them sometimes wake up suddenly in the night in panic and ask, “Is someone attacking?”
He also denied the media reports in which it was said that both the doctors had resigned. The family says that both the doctors have not left their jobs.
Big demand raised regarding safety of doctors
Dr. Srishti’s parents have demanded the state government to ensure the safety of health workers in hospitals. He says doctors work continuously for 48 to 72 hours, sometimes without adequate sleep or food. In such a situation, if they are physically attacked, it is a matter of concern for the entire health system.
Dr. Srishti’s mother Sangeeta Baviskar said that if a doctor commits a mistake then legal process should be adopted for it, but violence cannot be accepted under any circumstances. He demanded fair and transparent action in the matter.
Accused corporator arrested, judicial custody till July 13
The incident took place at KDMC’s Shastri Nagar Hospital on Monday, the video of which went viral on social media. In the video, Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was seen assaulting Dr. Vaibhav Salunkhe. Dr. Srishti Baviskar, who came to intervene, was also allegedly misbehaved and her mobile phone was thrown.
Police arrested Ramesh Mhatre and his three associates on Wednesday night. Later, he was taken to the hospital after complaining of deteriorating health, where health workers protested and demanded his disqualification from the post of corporator. After medical examination, he was discharged from the hospital and sent to judicial custody till July 13 by the court.
