Google Photos rolls out photo-to-video update with custom prompts, built-in audio

New Delhi: Google Photos is introducing a significant change to its photo-to-video service, allowing users to have more creative options and even more enhanced results. The tool transforms still images into short AI-generated videos, is currently capable of custom text prompts and native audio, and is closer to the recent experience of generative videos provided by Google.

Photo to video was initially one of the simple methods of animating photos with preset effects, introduced last year. The new upgrade will take Google far beyond the functionality of mere motion and open the door to personalized video creation, as Google will continue to transform Photos into a fully operational AI-driven creative platform.

Preset effects to custom creativity

At the time of the release of Photo to Video in July last year, the users had only two choices: Subtle movement or I’m feeling lucky. These presets would have an automatic motion applied to pictures, but had little control over the end result of the video.

That’s now changing. Google has also introduced custom prompts, wherein the user is allowed to explain what they want in a natural language. Movement, visual style, or general mood can be specified by people, as it is already being done in the Gemini app of Google. This renders this feature much more adaptable and helpful to those who want to get certain outcomes.

In order to make users start using it, Google Photos also offers prompts. They can be revised and polished, and videos can be created several times till the users are satisfied with the production.

Audio brings videos to life

Automatic audio generation is another important upgrade. Photo-to-video videos can now be made with sound as the default, which adds a sense of realism and emotional appeal to videos. This comes after Google had previously updated its Veo 3, which prioritized the use of audio when generating a video via AI.

As a result of motion, visuals, and sound being combined together, Photo to Video is a little bit more of a full video creation tool, as opposed to a simple animation function.

Gradual rollout across devices

Google indicates that the update is now being rolled out, although it may not be immediately available. The initial indications are that it is a rollout on the server-side, so a number of users might require a few days to experience the new choices.

Photo to video is accessible within the Create section of Google Photos on Android and iOS, as well as such functions as Remix, Collage, Highlight video, Cinematic photo, Animation, and Me Meme.

Users are provided with a limited number of generations per day, whereas AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers have higher limits.

Having custom prompts and audio on the board, Google Photos is taking a decisive leap. Photo to video is becoming more expressive and interactive with the update, but it is not simple enough to be used on a daily basis.
