Arijit Singh Retires From Playback Singing, Clarifies ‘Won’t Stop Maki

Arijit Singh, known for his melodious romantic songs in Bollywood films, has announced his decision to retire from playback singing. The 38-year-old confirmed it through his private X account on January 27. It comes a few days after his latest song, Maatrubhumi , from Battle Of Galwan released on social media.

The reason behind retirement was revealed by the singer. However, Arijit clarified that he will not stop making music. The two-time National Award winner confirmed that he has song releases in 2026, but he will not be signing new films hereon. The announcement came as a tweet on his private account as Arijit doesn’t have an official X account.

In a tweet on the private account, Arijit wrote, “Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”

Reason behind Arijit’s retirement

He added, “God has been really kind to me. I am fan of good music and in future will be learning more and do more on my own as a small little artist. Thanks again for all your support. I still have to finish some pending commitments , will finish them. So you might get some releases this year. Just to be clear that I won’t stop making music.”

Arijit revealed the reason behind this decision and wrote, “There is not one reason behind this, there are several reasons plus I have been trying to do this since a long time. Finally I have gathered the right courage. One of the reasons were simple, I get bored pretty quick, thats why I keep changing arrangements of the same songs and perform them on stage. So here is the thing, I got bored. I need to do some other music to live.”

Arijit gained overnight success with Aashiqui 2’s song, Tum Hi Ho, picturised on Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. Many identified him as the new age romantic voice. The success of Tum Hi Ho led to multiple chartbusters such as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Title Track, Apna Bana Le, Hawayein, Sajni, Ve Maahi, Gehra Hua, and the latest Ghar Kab Aaoge.

During his playback singing career, Arijit won two National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer – first for Binte Dil from Padmaavat (2018) at the 66th National Film Awards, and second for Kesariya from Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) at the 70th National Film Awards. He was also honoured with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in January 2025 for his contributions to music.

Arijit Singh, born in Kolkata, stayed away from the limelight despite his popularity. He connected with his fans through concerts and live shows. He is married to Koel Roy since 2014. They have no children.
