This is the easy solution

Lucy recommends using a premium seed mix for bird feeding. Or choose a single-ingredient bird food like Sunflower Hearts. This reduces the chances of the grains falling to the ground and preventing rats from getting food.

Install bird feeder on metal pole

Another effective way to deter rats is to install bird feeders on metal poles. Lucy explains that rats can easily climb wooden poles, trees or fences. But it is difficult for them to climb the smooth metal pole. If you want more protection, install a plastic baffle under the metal pole. It is commonly used to deter squirrels, but is equally effective against rats.
