Was this his wish or was there some trick of the gods hidden behind it? Let us know that story of Ramayana which changed the entire Ramayana.

Had to do hard penance to please Lord Brahma

According to mythology, the three brothers Ravana, Kumbhakaran and Vibhishana performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma. When Lord Brahma appeared and asked for a boon, the gods got scared after seeing the intensity of Kumbhakaran’s penance. The gods felt that if Kumbhakaran asked for something powerful, the balance of the universe would be disturbed.

Indra was tormented by the fear of snatching Indrasan

Kumbhakaran was known for his power. Devraj Indra’s biggest fear was that Kumbhakaran might ask for Indrasan (throne of heaven) as a boon. If this had happened, Indra would have had to leave his post. Due to this fear, Indra sought help from Mother Saraswati and made a plan.

Mother Saraswati turned the tongue of Kumbhkaran

As soon as Kumbhakaran stood in front of Lord Brahma to ask for a boon, Mother Saraswati sat on his tongue. Kumbhakaran actually wanted to ask for Indrasana, but due to the influence of Saraswati, Nidrasana (sleeping posture) came out of his mouth. While Kumbhakaran wanted to ask for Indrasana, but due to a slip of the tongue he asked for Nidrasana.

Lord Brahma gave a boon and there was a break of 6 months.

Lord Brahma said Amen. However, later when Kumbhakaran realized his mistake, he became very sad. Ravana also prayed to Lord Brahma to reduce this harsh boon. Then Lord Brahma amended it and said that it will sleep for 6 months and then wake up for a day.

Role of Kumbhkaran in Ramayana war

During the war in Lanka, Ravana made special efforts to wake up Kumbhakaran from his sleep. As soon as he woke up, Kumbhkaran fought and attained martyrdom in front of Shri Ram. It is believed that Kumbhkaran understood religion from within, but out of duty towards his brother, he supported Ravana.

Why was this move of Indra necessary?

It is believed that Kumbhakaran was so powerful and destructive that if he had remained awake all the time, he would have destroyed the entire creation. He used to eat thousands of creatures at a time. Therefore, that move of Indra is considered a big step taken to protect the universe.
