The word Satyanarayan is made up of two words, Satya and Narayan.

According to Skanda Purana, once Devarshi Narad reached the mortal world (earth) while wandering. There he saw that people were suffering from many sorrows and distressed due to their own deeds. The philanthropist Narad Muni, distraught, went straight to Lord Vishnu in Ksheer Sagar and prayed to him, O Lord, the people on earth are very unhappy. Is there any simple solution which can remove all their troubles?

Then Lord Vishnu smiled and said, O Narad, the person who wants to enjoy worldly pleasures and desires salvation after death, should fast and worship ‘Satyanarayana’. This fast is the simplest and most fruitful in Kalyug. It is believed that Shatananda, a very poor Brahmin of Kashi, was the first to observe this fast. God himself took the form of an old Brahmin and told them this story and method. Later, a poor woodcutter also saw this puja and took the pledge of truth, due to which the poverty of his life was removed.

Importance of Satyanarayan Puja

  • Freedom from suffering: It is believed that just listening to this story destroys the sorrows of life.
  • Wish fulfillment: This puja is considered especially fruitful on occasions like marriage, birth of a child or house warming.
  • mantle piece: This worship inspires man to move away from the path of lies and unrighteousness and follow the path of truth.

Special rule of Prasad in puja

Panjiri (roasted flour and sugar), banana fruit and Panchamrit have special significance in the story of Satyanarayan. It is said that leaving after the Katha without accepting Prasad is considered incomplete, as it is considered a symbol of reverence and humility towards God.
