Daughter’s Right to Shraddha: In Hindu religion, after the death of the parents, it is the son who often performs their Shraddha rituals, but many questions related to Shraddha rituals arise in the minds of people. Especially when there is only a daughter in a family instead of a son, then people are interested to know whether the daughter has the right to perform Shraddha of her parents? Some rules regarding this right of children have been mentioned in religious texts, especially Garuda Purana.

Garuda Purana is based on the dialogue between Lord Shri Hari Vishnu and the bird king Garuda. It is included in 18 Mahapuranas. In this and other religious texts, performing the Shraddha rituals of the parents is also considered an important duty of the child, so according to Garuda Purana, let us know whether the daughter has the right to perform the Shraddha rituals of the parents or not.

According to Garuda Purana…

According to Garuda Purana, the son has the main right to perform the Shraddha rituals of the parents. It is believed that the ancestors attain salvation through the Shraddha rituals performed by the son. For this reason, traditionally the daughter has not been considered the right person to perform the Shraddha ritual. However, different regions and traditions have different beliefs. It is seen in many places that depending on the circumstances, daughters also express reverence towards their parents.

In the absence of both son and daughter, other members of the family take up this responsibility. According to religious beliefs, if a person does not have a son then his wife has the right to perform Shraddha. Apart from this, son-in-law, grandson or any other eligible member of the family can also perform the rituals. If none of them are present in the family, the daughter’s son i.e. the grandson can perform the Shraddha of his maternal grandparents. In some circumstances, Shraddha rituals are also performed by pundits.

Why is it important to perform Shraddha?

Performing Shraddha after death brings peace to the souls of the ancestors. At the same time, if you do not perform Shraddha, Pitra Dosh can occur, due to which many problems can increase in life. Shraddhakarma is considered a means of paying respect and fulfilling one’s duty towards the ancestors. Only by performing Shraddha one gets freedom from the debt of ancestors.
