According to the legend, in Treta Yuga there was a glorious king named Kartavirya Sahastrabahu Arjun. He is also known as Kartavirya Arjun. Thousand-armed Arjuna has been given the status of God by considering him as the incarnation of Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu. He was born from the womb of mother Padmini in the house of Maharaj Kartavirya in the Haihaya dynasty. He became the king of Maheshwar (ancient name Mahishmati), the holy city of Khargone in Madhya Pradesh. Thousand-armed Arjun was very strong.
When Ravana, the king of Lanka, came to know about the bravery of the thousand-armed Arjun, he went to his city to defeat him. After reaching there, Ravana started doing penance on the banks of Narmada to please Lord Shiva and ask for a boon. At a short distance, Sahastrabahu Arjun along with his wives reached the Narmada river to take bath.

Then the thousand-armed Arjun defeated Ravana badly in the war and captured him.
Thousand-armed Arjun had kept Ravana captive in prison for six months in the city of Mahishmati. Later Ravana was released on the request of Ravana’s grandfather Maharishi Pulastya.
