Story of Yogini Ekadashi fast
According to the popular legend, the city named Alkapuri was ruled by King Kuber, the god of wealth. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He had a Yaksha servant named Hemmali, whose job was to bring beautiful flowers from Manasarovar every day and offer them for Shiva worship.

Hemmali’s wife Vishalakshi was very beautiful. One day he brought flowers, but was so engrossed in his wife’s love that he lost track of time. That is why he could not deliver the flowers on time for the worship of Lord Shiva. When the flowers did not arrive till noon, King Kuber became very angry. He called Hemmali and said that he had committed a big crime by disrupting the worship of Lord Shiva. Enraged, Kuber cursed him that he would be separated from his wife, go to earth and become a leper and suffer many hardships.
As soon as he received the curse, Hemmali fell from heaven to earth and suffered from leprosy. He also left his wife. Feeling sad, he wandered to the Himalayas, where he met Maharishi Markandeya. Hemmali told him his entire story and asked him the solution to get relief from this suffering.
Maharishi said that if he religiously observes the fast on Yogini Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadha month, all his sins will be destroyed. Hemmali observed the fast of Yogini Ekadashi as per the advice of the sage. Due to the effect of the fast, his leprosy was cured, he got his beautiful body back and he was also reunited with his wife. It is believed that fasting on Yogini Ekadashi destroys sins, removes sorrows and grants blessings of Lord Vishnu.
