Alcaraz made to sweat on way to Australian Open quarters

New Delhi: World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz faced a stern test from Tommy Paul on way to advancing to the Australian Open quarter-finals in Melbourne on Sunday.

The top seed had to dig deep to overcome 19th seed Paul 7-6(6), 6-4, 7-5 in the fourth-round against an opponent who has beaten him twice on the ATP Tour in previous meetings.

Paul had taken a 4-2 lead early in the match but the top seed fired 35 winners to book a date with Alex de Minaur or Alexander Bublik at Melbourne Park.

Alcaraz is bidding to become the youngest man to complete the Career Grand Slam (winning the singles title at all four majors), improving on the mark of Rafael Nadal and won on two hours and 44 minutes.

Jovic in last eight for first time

American Iva Jovic dominated Yulia Putintseva 6-0 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time.

The 18-year-old brushed aside Putintseva in only 53 minutes at John Cain Arena in a percise display where asserte control from the very beginning.

тАЬObviously, the scoreline is favourable but it doesnтАЩt matter how you get it done,тАЭ the 29th seed said on after her win.

тАЬI just wanted to get it done and I felt like if I let her come back a little bit, it would become a dogfight. So I just tried to keep it as far away as possible and just so happy to be in the quarter-finals.тАЭ
