Lakshman Urmila Story: Ramayana is not just a religious text, but is an example of sacrifice, service and dedication, which touches the hearts of people even today. When Lord Shri Ram went to exile, mother Sita and younger brother Lakshman also went with him. But the sacrifice that Laxman made during this 14 years of difficult exile is amazing and emotional in itself. Very few people know that Lakshman did not sleep even a single night for the entire 14 years of exile. He protected Shri Ram and Mother Sita by staying awake day and night. But the question arises that if Laxman did not sleep, then who kept sleeping in his place? Let us know about this amazing mythological story.
Lakshman asked for a boon from Nidra Devi
According to the Ramayana story, when Shri Ram, Mother Sita and Lakshman left for exile, Lakshman took a vow that he would stay awake day and night to protect his elder brother and sister-in-law. When Ram and Sita slept on the first night in the forest, Lakshman started keeping watch. Then Nidra Devi appeared near him. Lakshman prayed to Nidra Devi to grant him the boon of not having sleep for the next 14 years, so that he could complete his service without any hindrance. Nidra Devi said that according to the law of nature, someone will have to take her share of sleep.
Urmila’s great sacrifice
Lakshman requested Nidra Devi to give his share of sleep to his wife Urmila. When Nidra Devi reached Urmila in Ayodhya and narrated her the entire story, Urmila happily agreed. Urmila slept continuously for 14 years. Due to this sacrifice of his wife, Lakshman remained awake without sleeping. It is also said that Ravana’s son Meghnad had a boon that only a person could kill him who had not slept for 14 years. It was Urmila’s sacrifice that gave Lakshman the power to kill Meghnad.
Why is this story special?
While Laxman’s sacrifice is discussed everywhere in Ramayana, Urmila’s contribution is often left behind. This sacrifice of Urmila is a symbol of unwavering love and devotion to duty between husband and wife. Without Urmila’s support, it would not have been possible for Laxman to fulfill his difficult resolution. Therefore, Urmila’s 14 years of sleep fast is considered to be one of the biggest sacrifices of Ramayana.
