Football round-up: Man City register first league win of 2026, Augsburg end Bayern Munich’s unbeaten run

New Delhi: Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo scored goals as Manchester City registered a much‑needed 2‑0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday, January 24. The win lifted Pep Guardiola’s side provisionally to within four points of leaders Arsenal in the title race.

This was also City’s first league win in nearly a month, while Wolves continue to struggle, and are placed last in the table with eight points. Arsenal have the chance to restore their seven-point lead if the Gunners manage to beat Manchester United on Sunday.

Marmoush started the match ahead of Erling Haaland and scored the first goal of the match from Matheus Nunes’s cross in the sixth minute. Semenyo, who joined Manchester City two weeks ago from Bournemouth, netted the second goal in the first-half injury time, unleashing a blistering low shot past goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Pep Guardiola’s side now has 46 points in 23 matches, while Wolves have just eight points in the same number of games. In other Premier League matches, West Ham United thrashed Sunderland 3-1 to register consecutive victories, while Burnley played a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, and Fulham beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday.

Augsburg end Bayern Munich’s unbeaten run in Bundesliga

Augsburg scored two late goals in the second half to come from a goal down and beat hosts Bayern Munich 2-1 in the Bundesliga, handing Vincent Kompany’s side their first league defeat of the season.

Hiroki Ito netted the opening goal from a Michael Olise corner in the 23rd minute, but Bayern lacked spark in the frontline as Augsburg scored in the 75th and 81st minutes through goals from Arthur Chaves and Han-Noah Massengo to secure their first victory in Munich for 11 years.

Bayern Munich are still 11 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table, but second-placed Borussia Dortmund (39 points) have a chance to close that gap with a win against Union Berlin.

The hosts, who were unbeaten in their previous 27 league games, struggled a lot but still dominated the first half, taking a lead in the 23rd minute through Ito’s header. They missed several good chances through Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Lennart Karl before the visitors delivered one of their best performances.

They netted the equaliser in the 75th minute when Chaves scored with the back of his head from a corner. Just six minutes later, Augsburg completed a sensational comeback with Massengo striking from close range. Bayern hit the post with Olise’s shot in stoppage time, but Augsburg held their nerve to secure three points to move 13th in the table.
