According to the story of Shiva Purana, in ancient times, a powerful demon named Tarakasura performed rigorous penance for the Lord of Gods, Mahadev. Lord Shiva was very pleased with his penance and asked him to ask for a boon.

He said to Lord Shiva, O Lord! Give me a boon that my end comes only at the hands of your son and no one can kill me. Lord Shiva gave him this boon. Then after Mother Parvati committed Sati, Lord Shiva was in separation from her and finally he got absorbed in meditation. Taking advantage of this, Tarakasura created terror in all the three worlds i.e. heaven, earth and underworld.

Sparks emanating from the eyes of Lord Shiva

Even the gods became troubled by the atrocities of Tarakasura. Then to save him from his terror, the gods planned the marriage of Lord Shiva. The gods sent Kamadeva to Lord Shiva and asked him to awaken love in Mahadev. Due to this, Lord Shiva came out of his meditation and married Mother Parvati. After the marriage, Lord Shiva took out six sparks from his third eye.

Agni Dev put the sparks coming out of Mahadev’s eyes in the cold water of Saravana river. It is believed that Lord Kartikeya was born from these six sparks. That’s why he has six heads. After this, Lord Kartikeya grew up and killed Tarakasura. After this victory, all the gods made Kartikeya the commander of the gods.
