Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [भारत]July 9 (ANI): Three workers died after an oxygen cylinder exploded at a factory in Urla Industrial Area. According to police, two laborers died on the spot in the blast, while the third died on the way to the hospital. DCP (North) Mayank Gurjar confirmed the deaths on Wednesday and said the department concerned has started investigating the incident. “Two laborers died on the spot and another laborer died on the way to the hospital. The concerned department is investigating the matter,” Gurjar told ANI. He said that strict action will be taken against whoever is found guilty. The DCP said, “Post-mortem of the bodies is being conducted. Strict action will be taken against whoever is found guilty in this case.” Urla is one of the major industrial areas of Raipur where many manufacturing units are located. More details are awaited.

Heavy rain and flood in Chhattisgarh, 14 laborers rescued

The incident comes at a time when heavy rains are lashing entire Chhattisgarh, 14 laborers trapped in rising flood waters in Gariaband district were rescued and several parts of Raipur are battling severe waterlogging, which has left houses and roads flooded. The workers were trapped due to the sudden rise in the water level of the Bagnai river due to continuous rain for the last 24 hours. Gariaband DSP Nitish Singh said that this incident took place in Bijapal village located on the border of Gariaband and Mahasamund districts. DSP Singh said, “Bijapal village is located under the jurisdiction of Chura police station, on the border of Gariaband and Mahasamund districts. There was bridge construction work going on across the Bagnai river, and 14 laborers were living in a temporary shed below the bridge. Due to incessant rains in Gariaband district in the last 24 hours, the water level suddenly rose, trapping all 14 laborers.” Upon receiving information about the trapped labourers, a rescue operation was launched by the local authorities. “A joint rescue operation was successfully carried out by the Gariaband police team and Mahasamund home guard team. Had he not been rescued on time, his life could have been in danger; we have averted a serious situation,” the DSP said. The official further said that the administration is on high alert due to the continued bad weather in the area. DSP Singh said, “It is raining continuously. Gariaband district is surrounded by forests, small streams, rivers and hills; as a result, the water level is rising due to rain. Gariaband police team is on alert at the spot and keeping a close watch.”

Outcry due to waterlogging in the capital Raipur

Several parts of Raipur also experienced severe waterlogging following overnight rain, with residents reporting that the water level rose to knee-deep in some areas and waist-deep in others. Dirty water entered many homes, damaging belongings and forcing families to stay awake throughout the night to ensure the safety of children and elderly members. After the rain, many localities of the city turned into ponds. Along with roads being submerged, houses were flooded with two to three feet of water. From around 2 in the morning, people were seen draining water and trying to secure their belongings. Many families remained without sleep or food, and some even struggled to find drinking water.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Saturday weather bulletin, widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and West Madhya Pradesh till July 10. (ANI)
