The Central Government has announced to extend the duration of the government’s popular pension scheme Atal Pension Yojana. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the continuation of the government’s flagship Atal Pension Scheme (APY) till the financial year 2030-31. Along with this, expansion of financial assistance for publicity, developmental activities and gap funding has also been approved.
After the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a formal information was issued in this regard, in which it was told that the government has extended the period of this pension scheme and it will continue till 2030-31. With this, activities like awareness and capacity building will continue to get government support to increase the reach among workers in the unorganized sector.
when did it start
Atal Pension Yojana was started on May 9, 2015, the objective of which is to provide income security in old age to the workers in the unorganized sector. According to the information given by the government, till January 19, 2026, more than 8.66 crore members have been registered under APY. Under the scheme, there is a provision of guaranteeing a minimum pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month after the age of 60 years, depending on the contribution.

This scheme ensures regular income security in old age and plays an important role in economically empowering workers, especially those living in villages and small towns. It was decided in the cabinet meeting that the government will continuously spread awareness among the people about this scheme, will give information about its benefits and will continue to take necessary steps to make it more effective. Along with this, necessary financial assistance will also be continuously provided by the government to maintain the continuity and long-term sustainability of the scheme.
