Forgotten U-19 star slams century in Duleep Trophy to continue dream run after heart surgery

New Delhi: Former India Under-19 World Cup-winning skipper Yash Dhull smashed a sensational ton against East Zone in the Duleep Trophy at the BCCI Centre of Excellence ground in Bengaluru on August 30, Saturday. Dhull scored 133 runs in 157 balls, laced with 14 fours and three maximums, to help his side extend their lead to 563 runs in the second innings at the end of Day 3.

The 22-year-old batter was once regarded as one of the most talented young batters in India, and his initial run in domestic cricket was exceptional as he smashed two centuries in his debut Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Tamil Nadu. In the same season, he also scored a double-century against Chhattisgarh.

Dhull continued his red-hot form in his Duleep Trophy debut season, scoring 193 runs against East Zone. The Delhi’s lad’s average was 119.75 in his debut domestic season, but after that, his form dipped as he averaged just 30.42 in the next two years across 20 matches.

As his struggles on the field continued, Dhull also went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. In the midst of his struggle in cricket, a small hole in Delhi’s boy’s heart was detected during routine scans at the U-23 high-performance camp at the NCA last year.

Yash Dhull’s turning point in cricket

Dhull underwent heart surgery in July 2024, and that was a turnaround moment for the 22-year-old batter as his redemption journey began in the domestic season. The batter smashed two centuries in seven games in the Ranji Trophy, while scoring 444 runs at an average of 49.33.

The Delhi batter came with a new technique in his batting style, which featured a subtle trigger movement while batting to add balance to his game. Dhull continued his form in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025, where he uplifted his stocks again.

He has been batting like a man on a mission following his surgery and notched up 435 runs in the ongoing DPL 2025. He averaged 87 in the tournament with a monstrous strike rate of 167, including a century in just 49 balls against Harshit Rana’s North Delhi Strikers.

After helping his side to qualify for the playoffs of DPL 2025, Dhull left the tournament and is currently playing for the North Zone in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2025. His quick century in the second innings against East Zone caught the limelight as the East Zone bowling attack featured India’s top bowler, Mohammed Shami.
