Changed the face of Indian cricket as captain

Sourav Ganguly took command of the Indian team at a time when cricket was going through many challenges. He instilled in the team aggressive thinking, confidence and the spirit to win on foreign soil. Under his captaincy, India won the historic Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in 2001 and won the Test series for the first time in Pakistan in 2004.

Apart from this, under his leadership, India reached the finals of 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy and 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Big platform given to young players

Ganguly, known as ‘God of Offside’, scored 18,575 runs in 424 matches in his international career. This includes 38 centuries and 107 half-centuries. He scored 7,212 runs in 113 Tests and 11,363 runs in 311 ODIs.

Ganguly’s biggest legacy was not only his runs, but also the faith he showed in young players. He gave early opportunities to players like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan and Gautam Gambhir, who later took Indian cricket to new heights.
