13 months and 1000 robotic surgeries…Delhi AIIMS created history

New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has achieved a major achievement in the field of surgery. More than 1000 robotic surgeries have been performed in the Department of Surgical Disciplines of AIIMS in the last 13 months. This is a record for performing the maximum number of robotic surgeries in the shortest time in the country.

Till now, most of the robotic surgeries were done in private hospitals only. The cost involved would run into lakhs, but this surgery is done for free in AIIMS. This achievement is being considered a decisive achievement not only for AIIMS but also for the entire government health system of the country.

First hospital with robotic technology in general surgery

AIIMS Delhi has now become one of the first government hospitals in the country to adopt robotic technology in general surgery. Many patients have benefited from this. From stone surgery to hernia and gall bladder removal surgeries have also been done with the help of robots.

What is robotic surgery?

With the help of robotic surgery, doctors get three-dimensional (3D) vision and better dexterity during operations, due to which even difficult surgeries can be performed more easily.

Till now, robotic surgery in the country has been used mainly in urology, cardiothoracic surgery and cancer treatment surgeries, but its use for general surgery in government hospitals was very limited. AIIMS is removing this deficiency.

In which diseases is robotic surgery done?

Dr. Sunil Chamber, head of the surgical discipline department of AIIMS, said that robotic technology has been used in many types of operations. He told that at AIIMS we have done pancreatic duodenectomy and GI cancer surgery, hepato-biliary, kidney transplant and pancreas surgery. All these surgeries were earlier considered very challenging, but now they are being done easily with robotic technology.
