According to the story, in ancient times a Brahmin lived in Kanchipuri with his family. The Brahmin’s name was Devaswami and his wife’s name was Dhanvati. Both had seven sons and one daughter. The daughter’s name was Gunavati. When she grew up, the Brahmin asked his wife to look for a groom for his daughter. Then he gave his sister’s horoscope to his younger son and sent him to an astrologer. So that the marriage matter can move forward.
The astrologer, after looking at Gunvati’s horoscope, told that she would become a widow after marriage. When the Brahmin and his family came to know about this, they asked for a solution. Then the astrologer told the Brahmin about Soma Dhobin, a devoted woman living in Sinhaladweep. Also, the astrologer told the Brahmin that if Soma the washerman comes to your house and worships and blesses him, then the defect of your daughter will be removed.
After this the Brahmin sent his daughter along with his younger son to Sinhaladweep. When both of them reached the sea shore, they could not find any way to cross it. Then both of them started resting under a tree, hungry and thirsty. A family of vultures lived in a nest on a tree. At that time, there were only vulture babies in the nest, who were watching the brother and sister. When the vulture’s mother came in the evening, the children told the whole story of the brother and sister.
Hearing the story of the two brothers and sisters, the mother vulture took pity on them and told her children not to worry and eat food, she will help the brothers and sisters cross the sea. After this, after feeding the children, the mother vulture approached both the brothers and sisters and told them that she must have understood their problem. I will take you across the sea and take you to Soma Dhobin’s place.
Hearing this, both the brothers and sisters became happy. Then as soon as morning came, the vulture’s mother made both of them cross the sea and took them to Soma the washerman’s house in Sinhaladweep. Then Gunwati started living secretly near Soma Dhobin’s house and every day before dawn she started cleaning Soma Dhobin’s house. One day Soma saw Gunvati cleaning and plastering the house.
After this, Soma went to Gunvati and asked her why she goes away after bathing the courtyard of her house every day. On this Gunwati told him everything. Then Soma agreed to go with him to his house. He went to the Brahmin’s house and performed puja, but no one can ignore the rules and regulations. As soon as Gunvati got married, her husband died.
Then Soma donated all her virtues to Gunavati, due to which her husband became alive, but as Soma’s virtues diminished, her husband and son died. However, before leaving the house, Soma had told her daughters-in-law to keep her body safe in case anything happened to her husband and son. The daughters-in-law obeyed their mother-in-law and took care of the body.
Here Soma Dhobin worshiped Lord Vishnu in the shade of Peepal tree while returning to Sinhaladweep. Along with this, he revolved around the Peepal tree 108 times. Due to its virtuous effect, as soon as Soma reached home, her husband and son became alive again.
