Delhi Airport issues travel advisory amid IMD’s orange alert in NCR

New Delhi: Delhi Airport authorities have urged passengers to plan their travel with caution as the national capital braces for another spell of heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed large parts of the city, including Central, East, South and New Delhi, under an orange alert on Friday, warning of significant showers that could disrupt movement.

Issuing an alert for passengers, the Delhi Airport posted on X: “As per the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast, inclement weather conditions are expected in Delhi. However, flight operations at Delhi Airport are currently normal. For the latest flight information, passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines,” it said in its passenger advisory.

Travellers flying out of Delhi have been advised to allow extra time for their journey, with officials recommending the use of umbrellas and raincoats as a precaution.

Rain brings relief and disruptions alike

The latest showers have offered relief from the sweltering humidity that had lingered through the week. However, earlier bouts of intense rainfall left several areas waterlogged, triggering traffic snarls and slowing movement across busy stretches.

Rainfall is expected to continue across the capital for the next few hours, prompting advice for residents to stay indoors and avoid unsafe shelters such as trees or makeshift structures. Motorists have been asked to check traffic conditions before setting out.

IMD predicts more rains in Northern India

According to the wider forecast, unsettled weather is set to persist across north-western India over the coming days. The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, with very heavy rain likely in pockets of Uttarakhand and eastern Rajasthan. The wet spell, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas, is expected to continue into early September.

Monsoon activity is also forecast to remain active over Punjab and Haryana for the next three to four days, raising concerns for districts already soaked by excessive showers.
