Light from the roof, savings in the pocket: How Kanpur is creating a new model of solar power
Kanpur is no longer just an industrial city, but is gradually making its mark as a solar power house. Solar panels installed on the rooftops of the city are not only generating electricity but are also adding benefits to both people’s income and the environment. Under PM Surya Ghar Mukt Bijli Yojana, the total capacity of solar rooftop system in Kanpur has reached 64 MW, which is considered a big achievement in the state.
According to UP NEDA data, 20,756 solar rooftop systems have been installed so far in Kanpur district. With this achievement, Kanpur has reached third place in the state in terms of solar rooftop installation. From individual houses in the city to multi-storey buildings and housing societies, solar panels are being installed rapidly everywhere.
