Voting took place in 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra, which include cities like Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. Many celebrities like Anoop Jalota and Zoya Akhtar also appealed to the people to vote. BJP-Shiv Sena and NCP are the major parties.
Mumbai. Famous bhajan singer Anup Jalota stepped out to cast his vote in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections on Thursday. After casting his vote he showed his inked finger.
Asking people to fulfill their responsibilities and participate enthusiastically in the elections, he said, “We will make Mumbai more beautiful and shine…”. Director and producer Zoya Akhtar also cast her vote in Mumbai.
Many other celebrities including Sunil Shetty, singer and music composer Vishal Dadlani, famous lyricist Gulzar and John Abraham also did their part to cast their votes. Voting started early this morning in 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra. These elections are being held after a vigorous campaign and are considered very important for big cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nashik and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena are contesting the civic polls as allies under the banner of Mahayuti, except in Pune.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has decided to contest the elections alone in most of the corporations. In Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, both factions of the NCP have come together under a joint manifesto. According to the State Election Commission, a total of 3.48 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes to decide the fate of 15,908 candidates contesting on 2,869 seats in 893 wards of 29 municipal corporations. A total of 39,092 polling stations have been set up across the state. Voting began at 7:30 am today and will continue till 5:30 pm. Counting of votes is to take place tomorrow.
