Stock Market Holiday: The stock markets will remain closed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra.

Trading in the equity segment, derivatives, commodities and electronic gold receipts would remain closed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE (formerly Bombay Stock Exchange).

“In partial modification to Exchange circular reference no. NSE/CMTR/71775, the Exchange hereby notifies Thursday, January 15, 2026, as a trading holiday in the Capital Market (CM) Segment on account of Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra,” the NSE said in a circular on Monday.

Earlier, it had stated that January 15 would be observed as a settlement holiday, while trading would be open on the day.

Separately, on January 15 due to the Maharashtra civic polls.

In total, exchanges usually have around 15 trading holidays in a year, apart from regular weekly closures on Saturdays and Sundays.

 

On January 10, the Maharashtra government declared a public holiday for January 15 in Mumbai for civic polls. The holiday will apply to government and semi-government offices, corporations, boards, public undertakings, banks and central government offices within the jurisdiction of the civic bodies.

Meanwhile, voting is underway in 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, with the spotlight on Mumbai.

Polling for 2,869 seats in 893 wards in these municipal corporations commenced amid tight security at 7.30 am and will end at 5.30 pm. A total of 3.48 crore eligible voters will decide the fate of 15,931 candidates.

Elections to these municipal corporations are taking place after a gap of several years, with the terms of most of them having concluded between 2020 and 2023.

Voting is underway in the following municipal corporations: Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Vasai-Virar, Thane, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur, Kalyan-Dombivli, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Chandrapur, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Parbhani, Nanded-Waghala, Mira-Bhayandar, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Latur, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Jalna, Ichalkaranji and Dhule.
