2024–25 were successful for Malayalam cinema. ‘Loka’ marks the first Mollywood entry into the Rs 300 crore club. Mohanlal’s ‘Empuran’ and ‘Tudrum’ earned more than 200 crores and Nivin Pauly made a comeback with ‘Sarvam Maya’ (131 crores).
The years 2024 and 2025 were great for Malayalam cinema. Mollywood as an industry progressed a lot during this period. New experiments took place in the content and audiences from other states also came to watch films in theatres. As Malayalam cinema steps into the new year with new expectations, let’s take a look at the list of the highest-grossing films of last year. Last year, Mohanlal once again proved his stardom, Nivin Pauly made a comeback and with ‘Loka’, Mollywood entered the Rs 300 crore club for the first time.
Entry into Rs 300 crore club
Not only was it the first Malayalam film to enter the Rs 300 crore club, it was also special that for the first time in South India, a women-centric film earned more than Rs 100 crore. Mohanlal had three films in last year’s top 12 list – ‘Empuran’, ‘Tudrum’ and ‘Hridayapurk’. Of these, ‘Empuran’ and ‘Tudrum’ made it to the Rs 200 crore club, while ‘Hridayavark’ entered the Rs 100 crore club. The earning figures were as follows: Empuraan 266.3 crores, Tudarum 233.5 crores and Hridayee 75.6 crores.
Nivin Pauly, who made a spectacular comeback with the first Rs 100 crore club film of his career, is also one of the big stars of last year. Nivin’s horror-comedy film ‘Sarvam Maya’ has earned Rs 131 crore so far. At number five in the list is Mammootty’s villain film ‘Kalankaval’, which earned Rs 84 crore at the box office. Pranav’s horror film earned Rs 82 crore and ‘Alappuzha Gymkhana’ earned Rs 69 crore. The ranking from one to eight is as follows: Loka, Empuraan, Tudarum, Sarvam Maya, Kalankavaal, Deus Ere, Hridayamukta and Alappuzha Gymkhana.
At the ninth to twelfth place are ‘Rekhachitram’, ‘Officer on Duty’, ‘Eko’ and ‘Bhabhabha’. Their earnings are as follows: Rakshastram 57.3 crores, Officer on Duty 54.25 crores, Echo 47 crores and Bhabhabh 45 crores.
