According to a release from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the consignment included one metric tonne of premium stone fruits (stone fruits) sourced from farmers in Shopian and Pulwama districts and sent to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The export of Areco cherries and Centros plums to the UAE is another step towards expanding India’s fresh fruit exports and enhancing farmers’ income, the release said.

Will help in increasing the income of farmers

Congratulating the farmers and exporter, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said, “Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as an important hub for premium horticultural products with immense export potential.”

He further added, “APEDA is committed to facilitating market access for farmers through export promotion initiatives, quality enhancement and access to global buyers. The export of Areco cherries and Centros plums to UAE reflects the growing international demand for India’s premium fruits and will create new opportunities for growers while contributing to higher income through better price realisation.”

Price found 120% more than domestic market

This export initiative is expected to benefit farmers by providing access to premium international markets and ensuring better prices, the Commerce and Industry Ministry release said. It said producers linked to the export supply chain have received “approximately 60 percent higher returns for cherries and 120 percent for plums compared to current domestic market prices”, reflecting the value created through export-led market access.

This successful shipment is expected to create new export opportunities for growers from Shopian and Pulwama, encourage wider adoption of export-oriented production practices and strengthen the global presence of premium stone fruits of Jammu and Kashmir, the release said.

According to the release, APEDA continues to promote exports of agricultural produce through market linkage initiatives, quality assurance support, buyer outreach programs and export facilitation measures. (ANI)
