According to IRNA, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. “The US and Israel were forced to practically recognize Iran’s allies in the axis of resistance under the recent memorandum,” Ghalibaf said. “This is one of the achievements of this memorandum,” he said.

MoU victory of ‘axis of resistance’: Ghalibaf

The Parliament Speaker said that Iran and the axis of resistance stand together against the US and Israel. He said the memorandum represented “a defeat for America” and “an achievement for the resistance front” both militarily and politically. Ghalibaf also stressed the need for unity among Islamic countries to free them from “American and Israeli domination”. He praised the Houthis and the Yemeni people for their resistance against “violations of international law and oppression”, saying they have demonstrated the unified power of the axis of resistance on the economic, military and political fronts.

Al-Nuaimi said Yemen and Iran stand “in the same abyss” for the “Islamic Ummah” (the global community of all Muslim believers). “What happened in Iran during the recent war has become an ideology for the entire resistance front,” he said.

What is the ‘axis of resistance’?

The term “axis of resistance” was coined by Iran in 2002 in response to the “Axis of Evil” theory put forward by US President George W. Bush. That doctrine named Iraq, Iran, and North Korea as states allegedly involved in terrorism and weapons of mass destruction programs. The “axis of resistance” refers to a loose-knit, Iran-centric network that includes both state and non-state actors – notably Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and militia groups operating in Iraq and Syria. This alliance is defined by the opposition of Western and Israeli regional interests.

Khamenei’s funeral and the President’s resolution

Meanwhile, Iranian President Massoud Pezheshkian said on Sunday (local time) that the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei was not a farewell but “a pledge to follow his path”, IRNA reported. According to IRNA, Pezeshkian made the comments in an interview with the state broadcaster while covering the funeral of Ayatollah Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on February 28.

Pezeshkian said, “I do not accept the interpretation of ‘farewell’. This is not a farewell, but a determination to continue on the path.” The Iranian President expressed condolences over the death of the leader, his family members and all those who lost their lives in the war for “the honor and dignity of Iran and Islam”. According to IRNA reporting, Pezeshkian said that the enemy had changed the geography of the region by waging a war against Iran, but claimed that the conflict had strengthened unity and solidarity among Muslims, as well as exposed “the falsehood of human rights claims.”
