“We Survived Dark Ages” – United Fans Blast Interim Manager Choice, Doubt Carrick Can Deliver Real Progress

Manchester United fans greeted Michael Carrick’s interim return with sarcasm and frustration, calling it survival from the “dark ages” rather than progress, as doubts grow over the club’s direction this season.

Manchester United are preparing to appoint Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the season, with an agreement in principle already reached. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the deal is nearly complete, with only final contractual details left unresolved.

Carrick is expected to take charge this Saturday when United face Manchester City in a high‑profile derby at Old Trafford. The process has been led by director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, with final approval required from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family. Once confirmed, United will turn their attention to appointing a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim, dismissed on January 5.

The 44‑year‑old edged out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, another former United figure interviewed for the caretaker role, while Darren Fletcher’s temporary spell added further uncertainty. Carrick previously managed three matches as interim boss in 2021 following Solskjaer’s departure, before stepping aside for Ralf Rangnick.

Out of work since leaving Middlesbrough last June, Carrick guided the club to the Championship play‑offs in 2022–23 and narrowly missed out again the following season. His managerial record may lack Solskjaer’s depth, but his long association with United has proved decisive.

Carrick made 464 appearances for the club, winning multiple trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, and later served on the coaching staff under José Mourinho and Solskjaer. That deep‑rooted understanding of United’s culture and expectations has positioned him as a steady option to guide the team through the remainder of the campaign.
