Delhi in grip of severe coldwave as mercury dips to 2.9 degree celsius, IMD issues yellow alert

New Delhi: As the severe coldwave gripped the national capital and its adjoining areas, Delhi on Sunday experienced the coldest day of the season, with the temperature dipping to 3 degree celsius in some areas. Issuing a yellow alert, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of similar weather conditions for next two days.

Similar coldwave conditions expected on Monday

Issuing a forecast, the IMD said that coldwave conditions are expected to continue with minimum weather conditions on Monday is expected to be between 3-5 degree celsius, while the maximum temperature is likely to be between 17-19 degree celsius. The coldwave is declared when the temperature dips below 4.5 degrees Celsius and 6.4 degree celsius below normal.

On Sunday, Safdarjung Observatory recorded the minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius, which was 2.6 degrees Celsius below normal, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 18.8 degree celsius, which was 1.1 degrees below normal.

Ayanagar recorded coldest on Sunday

Ayanagar in the national capital recorded the coldest locality in the city with 2.9 degree celsius, which was 4.2 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature recorded here was 18.1 degrees Celsius. Recording its lowest temperature in 13 years, Palam witnessed 3.0 degrees Celsius, which was 4.3 degree celsius below normal. In 2013, Palam recorded the temperature at 2.6 degree celsius. However, it recorded the lowest temperature of 2.2 degree celsius in 1967.

In the meantime, the Air Quality Index (AQI) om Delhi recorded ‘Poor’ category. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) logged at 291. While 19 stations recorded ‘very poor’, 20 recorded at ‘poor’ category.

The air quality is expected to be at ‘very poor’ category between January 12 and January 14. With not much chances of visible improvement in next few days, as per air quality warning system.
