This year has been unmatched for renewable energy, the capacity of this sector has increased so much

clean energy

The year 2025 has been great for the country’s energy sector. This year the country’s capacity in clean energy has increased. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi said that India recorded a record-breaking year in its clean energy journey in 2025, with the installed capacity of non-fossil fuels increasing to 266.78 GW. This is a growth of 22.6 percent compared to 2024, when non-fossil capacity was 217.62 GW and new non-fossil capacity of 49.12 GW was added this year.

He said solar energy led this growth, with its installed capacity increasing from 97.86 GW in 2024 to 135.81 GW in 2025, a massive increase of 38.8 percent. Good growth was also seen in wind energy capacity, which increased from 48.16 GW to 54.51 GW, i.e. an increase of 13.2 percent. Overall, solar and wind energy drove India’s renewable energy expansion this year.

Bioenergy and small hydro also dominated

Other renewable energy sectors also contributed significantly to the overall growth in 2025. Installed capacity of bioenergy reached 11.61 GW, including 0.55 GW from waste-to-energy off-grid projects, showing continued progress in clean fuel production and waste management.

Small hydro capacity increased to 5.16 GW, supporting renewable energy development for decentralized and local areas. Large hydro capacity was 50.91 GW, including 7,175.6 MW of pumped storage, which helps keep the grid stable and integrate renewable energy.

Expressed gratitude to PM Modi

Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi said that the record growth achieved in 2025 shows strong policy direction, long-term vision and continuous implementation under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He said that this progress further strengthens India’s path towards energy security, fighting climate change and a self-reliant green economy, as well as rapidly moving towards the national target of 500 GW non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. The Union Minister further said that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will continue to work with the states and all stakeholders to further accelerate the use of renewable energy across the country.
