What is the history of Sakhi Hanuman Temple?

Local people say that about 500 years ago, a divine saint named Sakhi Baba lived in Orchha. Once at night, Hanumanji appeared to him in a female form and said that this form of his should be installed at some special place and worshiped. Sakhi Baba chose Jhansi to establish this unique form of Hanumanji and laid the foundation of Sakhi Hanuman Temple. Since then Hanumanji is being worshiped here only in female form.

When did Hanumanji take female form?

The description of the female form of Hanumanji is found in Valmiki or any other Ramayana, but only in Anand Ramayana. According to him, when Hanumanji went to Lanka to search for Mother Sita, he assumed the form of a woman. In Anand Ramayana, there is a description of the female form of Hanumanji in this couplet – ‘A friend named Charushila always remains with her husband, it is the maid and the slave, triya tanya bajrang.’ That is, Hanuman ji had served Goddess Sita by becoming a friend named Charushila.
