What was Gadgil’s specialty?

Gadgil was born in Pune in 1942. Since childhood, he had a keen interest in nature and birds. His father was also a bird lover, which further increased Gadgil’s curiosity about ecology. Even after receiving his doctorate from Harvard University, he always called himself a “people’s scientist”. He believed that science should be for society, not just for academic laboratories.

Gadgil Report and Western Ghats: Why was it controversial?

Gadgil founded the Center for Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science and worked in collaboration with tribals, farmers and fishermen. In 2011 he chaired the Western Ghats Ecology Panel, which led to the Gadgil Report. This report recommended declaring 75% of the Western Ghats as ecologically sensitive. The warning was clear – uncontrolled mining and deforestation would lead to landslides, floods and long-term damage. This report proved politically inconvenient, but years later his predictions proved correct, when landslides and floods occurred in many parts of Kerala, including Kerala.
