Mercedes-AMG GT XX Sets 5,479 km World Record

New Delhi: The Mercedes AMG GT XX is the first fully electric car made by AMG. It was tested at the Nardo track in Italy, a 12.5 km-long circular track built for high-speed and long-distance runs. Two cars were used during the testing, and they only stopped for quick charging. In one of the main tests, the GT XX covered 5,479 km in just 24 hours. This makes a new world record in the competition of electric cars; the GT XX beats the earlier records made by models from XPeng P7 (3,961 km), Xiaomi YU7 Max (3,945 km), and even Mercedes’ own CLA EV (5,479 km).

The GT XX also broke several other records. It managed to cover 10,860 km in 48 hours, then 26,808 km in 120 hours, and a huge 40,075 km in 181.24 hours, which is about the same distance as going once around the Earth. Mercedes even named the challenge Around the World in 80 Days. The title was secured by Mercedes AMG F1 driver George Russell with support from a team of 17 professional drivers from the AMG GTS motorsport program.

Car battery and motor

The car is powered by three motors, including two at the back and one at the front. Together, they produce 1,360 hp, send power to all four wheels, and push the car to speeds of over 360 kph. These motors are usually used in hybrid supercars, but for the first time, they are being used in a fully electric vehicle. The GT XX runs on a 114 kWh NMC battery with support of an 800 V ultra-fast charging system. At a peak charging rate of 850 kW, the car can add about 400 km of range in only five minutes. The battery is made with slim cylindrical cells inside aluminium casings, which help keep it cool and deliver power quickly.
