Cervical Cancer: According to a United Nations (UN) report, every two minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is a common cancer in women. Every year the month of January is celebrated as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, 6,60,000 women worldwide were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2022 and about 3,50,000 women died from the disease.

UNICEF says that this disease kills a woman every two minutes. Almost all cervical cancer cases are associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. It is a sexually transmitted virus. In most cases, the body’s immune system kills the virus naturally, but chronic infection with some cancer-causing HPVs can cause abnormal cell growth, which may lead to cancer. Cervical cancer can be prevented and cured by timely screening, vaccination and treatment.

Health experts recommend that all girls should get the HPV vaccine and undergo cervical screening every year. This is one of those cancers which, if detected early and treated properly, can be successfully cured. Its main symptoms include abnormal discharge from the vagina, pain during sex, bleeding after pelvic examination, more vaginal discharge than normal, bleeding from the discharge, vaginal bleeding after menopause, pain in the pelvic area and pain while urinating.
