EXPLAINED: Why Shubman Gill Is Not Leading Punjab In Vijay Hazare Trophy Against Sikkim

Teams are gearing up for Round 5 action at various locations in India as the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 intensifies. All games are scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM IST. India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill will represent Punjab in a Vijay Hazare Trophy encounter against Sikkim on Saturday.

However, the game will take place behind closed doors and without spectators.

Who Will Captain Punjab?

This might come as a surprise to many, but Shubman Gill would not be leading Punjab in the match against Sikkim. Explosive Indian batter Abhishek Sharma is the captain of Punjab, but as he is not available for the Sikkim game, the team will be led by Prabhsimran Singh.

Gill will be leaving the team soon to join the Indian team’s camp for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand starting from January 11. The Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Sikkim would be the first time Gill returns to action after getting injured during the South Africa series and the T20 World Cup snub.

In addition to Gill, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul, Arshdeep Singh and Ravindra Jadeja are scheduled to represent their respective domestic team on January 6. There have been rumours that some of the games could be moved to the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, which can hold close to 25,000 fans, ever since word spread that Indian players would be participating in the competition.
