Why did MS Dhoni bat ahead of Yuvraj Singh in 2011 WC final? Sachin Tendulkar reveals

New Delhi: Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar recently gave fans a special opportunity to connect with him on Reddit as he hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA). Fans started posting questions related to cricket and beyond.

One of the fans asked an intriguing question, referring to Virender Sehwag’s revelation that in the 2011 World Cup final Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s promotion ahead of Yuvraj Singh was Tendulkar’s suggestion. He asked whether it was true or not.

In response to the same, Tendulkar confirmed that it was true and explained the reason behind it. He said, “There were two reasons. The left-right batting combination would have upset the two spinners. Also, Muralitharan had played for CSK (from 2008-10) and MS had played against him for three seasons in the nets.”

The decision went well with the situation, and the former Indian skipper went on to score 91 at the Wankhede Stadium when India lost both Virendra Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Alongside Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir stood tall and set the tone with his excellent 97-run knock as they were chasing a 274-run target. Dhoni scored the winning six, lighting up the stadium in joy and ending the jinx of the trophy.

These knocks turned out to be crucial as India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets, ending their prolonged 28-year wait for a World Cup trophy.

Tendulkar’s favourite innings

During the same session on Reddit, another fan asked him his favourite innings of all time. Well, he has played many memorable knocks for India, but he called out his 103-run knock against England in Chennai in 2008 as the most meaningful. His remarkable inning helped Men In Blue chase down 387 and won the match, and went on to win the two-Test series by 1-0.

Tendulkar’s lively exchanges not only gave fans a chance to interact with him but also rekindled cherished memories etched in their hearts.
