Where did the name come from… Many historians believe that the name “Andaman” is derived from the Hindu god Hanuman, an important character in the Ramayana. According to a popular theory, Malay sailors, who were well acquainted with these islands, called them “Islands of Hyndman”. ‘Hundaman’ in Malay language was the name of “Hanuman”.
