Mirabai Chanu strikes gold with 193 Kg lift at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships

New Delhi: Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Channu produced a record-breaking performance to clinch the gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships on Monday. This marked her first appearance after the Paris 2024, leading India’s charge at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, where the hosts have a chance to secure multiple medals.

The 31-year-old lifted a total of 193 kg (84kg+109kg) to smash the Commonwealth total, snatch and clean and jerk records as she stands at the pinnacle of the women’s 48kg podium, a category that has also brought her both a world title and Commonwealth Games medals.

She has recently moved down from the 49kg weight class which no more features in the Olympics. This also marked Channu’s first victory after her fourth place finish in the Paris Games last August.

However, she has already made it clear before the event that she aims to go all-out in Ahmedabad with her focus firmly on October’s World Championships and next year’s Asian Games. “I’m not putting all my effort here because my main goal is to peak later. The Asian Games remain my dream, as I don’t have a medal there yet,” she said.

Though managing the weight was going to be a challenge for her, which she herself admitted but she has overcome all challenges, collecting almost every accolade the sport has to offer. Earlier in the day, Preetismita Bhoi also clinched a gold medal in women’s 44 kg category. The 15-year-old weightlifter lifted the highest weight marking a total of 150 kg in both events and finished first by a margin of 10 kg.
