America’s Chicago-based Nuclear Fuel Technology Company is now planning to work together with NTPC in India. Under this partnership, NTPC can take a limited stake in that American company. Its purpose is to access new technology and prepare itself for future nuclear fuel needs.
Can be used in existing reactors also
The most important thing about this collaboration is that the new thorium based fuel can also be used in India’s existing pressurized heavy water reactors. This means that the country will not need to build the entire nuclear infrastructure from scratch. This will reduce costs and increase energy production.
New law opens the way
The recently passed new nuclear energy law has made such partnerships easier. For the first time, private and foreign companies have got an opportunity to play a limited role in India’s nuclear sector, especially in the field of fuel and technology. With this, India can get both modern technology and investment.
