NTPC’s big bet, new turn in nuclear energy; India and America came together

thorium based nuclear fuel

India’s energy needs are continuously increasing and with this the country is now focusing on such options which are safe, cheap and sustainable in the long run. Taking an important step in this direction, preparations are being made for a partnership between an American nuclear technology company and India’s largest power company NTPC. The purpose of this cooperation is to advance thorium based nuclear fuel in India.

Why is India’s focus on thorium?

India has limited reserves of uranium, while one of the world’s largest reserves of thorium is present in India. This is the reason why thorium has been considered the future of the country’s energy security for decades. Not only can power generation from thorium be reliable for long periods of time, but it also produces relatively little nuclear waste.

Strategic partnership between NTPC and American company

America’s Chicago-based Nuclear Fuel Technology Company is now planning to work together with NTPC in India. Under this partnership, NTPC can take a limited stake in that American company. Its purpose is to access new technology and prepare itself for future nuclear fuel needs.

Can be used in existing reactors also

The most important thing about this collaboration is that the new thorium based fuel can also be used in India’s existing pressurized heavy water reactors. This means that the country will not need to build the entire nuclear infrastructure from scratch. This will reduce costs and increase energy production.

New law opens the way

The recently passed new nuclear energy law has made such partnerships easier. For the first time, private and foreign companies have got an opportunity to play a limited role in India’s nuclear sector, especially in the field of fuel and technology. With this, India can get both modern technology and investment.

Steps towards energy security and self-reliance

Increasing use of thorium based fuel can reduce India’s dependence on imported nuclear fuel. This will help the country become more self-reliant in energy matters in the long run. Besides, the cost of power generation is also expected to reduce and safety standards to improve.

Experts believe that if this plan is successful, India can give new impetus to its three-phase nuclear program. By making better use of thorium from existing reactors, the foundation of a completely thorium-based energy system can be laid in the future.
