Australia Team for T20 World Cup: Australia has also announced the team for the T20 World Cup 2026 to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. 15 players including captain Mitchell Marsh have been included in the team. But, the surprising thing is that the Australian selectors did not select the same player in the team, who was very famous in the year 2025. After the announcement of the Australian team, the surprising thing was not only this but also the selection of the player who was missing from the last 12 T20 Internationals. Since the T20 World Cup 2026 is to be held in India and Sri Lanka, Australia has given importance to spin.
Mitchell Owen named but out of T20 WC team
The two surprising things in the selection of the Australian team for the T20 World Cup 2026 were the exclusion of Mitchell Owen and the inclusion of Cooper Connolly in the team. Last year, Mitchell Owen came into limelight when he scored a stormy century for Hobart Hurricane against Sydney Thunder in the BBL. He scored 108 runs in 42 balls with 11 sixes. After this, Mitchell Owen came into limelight when he was called from PSL to play in IPL. Preity Zinta’s team had roped in her for Rs 3 crore. This Australian all-rounder remained in the headlines for his international debut in July last year.
Is this the reason for Mitchell Owen being out?
Now the question is why Mitchell Owen did not get a place in the T20 World Cup team? The reason for his not being selected in the Australian team was his performance. Mitchell Owen remained in the headlines but his performance was not that good. In the 50 T20s played last year, he scored only 981 runs. In this he played 13 T20 Internationals, in which he scored only 163 runs. In India his performance was even worse. Last year, in the 3 T20 Internationals played in India, he could score only 14 runs.
Out of the team from 12 T20I but selected for T20 WC
Mitchell Owen could not make it to the T20 World Cup team, but Cooper Connolly, who was not a part of the Australian team for the last 12 T20 Internationals, has got a place in it. This decision of the Australian selectors has surprised everyone. Apart from Cooper Connolly, Matthew Short, Matt Kunhman and Xavier Bartlett have also got a place in the T20 World Cup 2026 team. This will be the first T20 World Cup for all these players.
The team also has the experience of players like Pat Cummins, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood. Adam Zampa will be seen commanding Australia’s spin in the T20 World Cup.
