According to religious texts, Brahma’s son Daksha Prajapati had a daughter named Sati, who was an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. Goddess Sati was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and wanted to get her as a husband. For this, Goddess Sati pleased Shiva by doing severe penance.
Seeing the devotion of Goddess Sati, Mahadev was pleased and married her. Once Prajapati Daksha performed a huge yajna, in which all the deities were called. Prajapati Daksha did not invite Goddess Sati and Mahadev to that yagna due to hatred.
– Goddess Sati wanted to join the yagna performed by her father. Even after Shivji’s refusal, Goddess Sati reached that yagna without invitation. There he saw that Mahadev was being insulted in that yagna, she was very sad to see this.
– Goddess Sati jumped into the Yajna Kund and committed self -immolation. Due to this incident, Shiva drowned in mourning and went to do penance in a cave. In the next life, Goddess Sati became Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas. Even in this birth, she wanted to get Mahadev as her husband.
– Parvati started meditating day and night to get Mahadev as her husband. Once Goddess Parvati’s stories were taken to the dense forest, where she made a shift to please Shiva by constructing a Shivling with sand.
– This penance of Goddess Parvati lasted for 12 years. Pleased, Mahadev appeared to him and pledged to accept him as his wife. This penance is called Hartalika Teej Vrat. Women who fast on the day of Hartalika Teej must hear this story.
