New Delhi: A major security alert was triggered in Rajasthan on New Year’s Eve after police intercepted a car carrying a huge cache of explosive material in Tonk district. The police was acting based on specific intelligence inputs as they stopped a Maruti Ciaz in the Baroni police station area and uncovered a large quantity of illegal explosives hidden inside the vehicle.
As per the officials, the car was carrying nearly 150 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, which had been cleverly concealed in bags of urea fertiliser to avoid suspicion. Along with the chemical, police also recovered around 200 explosive cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire, measuring nearly 1,100 metres in total.
The seizure led to the immediate arrest of two men identified as Surendra Mochi and Surendra Patwa. According to investigators, the accused were allegedly transporting the explosive consignment from Bundi to Tonk for further supply. The vehicle used for transportation has also been seized as part of the probe.
Senior police officials said the operation was carried out swiftly to prevent any possible misuse of the explosives. Deputy Superintendent of Police Mrityunjay Mishra confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway. “Based on specific intelligence, a vehicle was intercepted and explosive material was recovered. Two accused have been arrested, and all angles are being examined,” he said.
Police are now questioning the suspects to determine whether the explosives were meant for illegal mining activities or had a more dangerous purpose. The officials have not ruled out any possibility and said the background of the accused and their links are being verified.
The seizure has raised concerns as ammonium nitrate has been linked to recent deadly incidents. Last month, the chemical was used along with other high-grade explosives in a blast near Delhi’s Red Fort that claimed 15 lives. Investigators later found that the explosive device may have been improperly assembled, leading to the explosion.
